Is Your Fine China Worth Turning Into Jewelry? 3 Tips

If you’re wondering how fit your plate is for a jewelry transformation, these tips can make it easier to decide.

1. The flatter the piece, the more versatile it will be as jewelry

Pieces cut from flat china can fit together in a wider variety of compositions and will hang straighter from the body. This is why I work mostly with plates and saucers. If you have a curved bowl or a mug, I can still work with that! The designs will merely be more limited to simple or one-piece compositions.

2. The quality of the surface may affect longevity of the jewelry

If a plate has a lot of crazing or surface cracks, it can spontaneously break during the making process and is more subject to cracking after the jewelry is finished. Most of the time this isn’t an issue, but it is more likely to happen with crazed china.

And most importantly…..

3. Do you love your china?

If the answer is yes, then it is absolutely worth transforming into jewelry! I’ve made jewelry from tall glasses, square serving dishes, and even a sake bottle. Sometimes the object’s original shape can make the jewelry design choices more limited, but there are always options. No matter what you are wanting to create, I can work with what you have to make it happen.
